XCS Research Methodology

Evidence-Based Cyber Intelligence Research

  1. Introduction

X Cyber Squad (XCS) follows a structured, evidence-based approach to independent cyber intelligence research. Our methodology focuses on collecting publicly available information, analysing cyber threats, validating findings and producing reliable intelligence assessments.

Our objective is to ensure that every published research article is transparent, traceable and analytically sound.

  1. Research Requirements

Every research project begins by defining its intelligence requirements.

We identify:

  • Research objectives and key questions.
  • Relevant threat actors, campaigns or technologies.
  • Geographic and sectoral scope.
  • Available public information sources.
  • Intelligence gaps and research limitations.
  1. Information Collection

XCS uses legitimate and authorised sources, including:

  • Official government and cybersecurity advisories.
  • CERT and national cybersecurity publications.
  • MITRE ATT&CK knowledge base.
  • Security vendor threat research.
  • Academic papers and technical publications.
  • Public malware analysis reports.
  • Open-source intelligence platforms.

Original source URLs, publication dates and relevant timestamps are recorded wherever available.

  1. Source Evaluation and Verification

Information is evaluated based on:

  • Source credibility.
  • Source reliability.
  • Information accuracy.
  • Independent corroboration.
  • Publication date and relevance.
  • Potential bias or conflicting claims.

Important findings are cross-checked against independent sources whenever possible.

  1. Technical and Intelligence Analysis

Depending on the research objective, analysis may include:

  • Threat actor profiling.
  • APT campaign analysis.
  • MITRE ATT&CK technique mapping.
  • Malware behaviour research.
  • Infrastructure and indicator correlation.
  • Timeline reconstruction.
  • Relationship and attribution hypothesis analysis.
  • Cyber threat trend assessment.

Technical indicators and analytical conclusions are kept separate.

  1. Evidence Classification

XCS distinguishes between three categories:

Facts: Information directly supported by reliable evidence.

Allegations: Claims made by a source that have not been independently established.

Hypotheses: Analytical explanations or assessments that require further validation.

We do not present assumptions as confirmed findings.

  1. Confidence Assessment

Research conclusions are assigned qualitative confidence levels:

  • High: Multiple reliable and independent sources support the assessment.
  • Moderate: Credible evidence exists, but some important gaps remain.
  • Low: Limited evidence or significant uncertainty exists.

Confidence reflects the strength of available evidence, not certainty about future events.

  1. Research Documentation

Where applicable, published research includes:

  • Source references and URLs.
  • Publication and observation dates.
  • Relevant technical indicators.
  • Analytical methodology.
  • Evidence limitations.
  • Confidence assessments.
  • Research update information.
  1. Responsible Research Principles

XCS is committed to:

  • Public-source and authorised research.
  • Responsible handling of sensitive information.
  • Avoiding unsupported attribution.
  • Respecting privacy and applicable laws.
  • Human review of AI-assisted analysis.
  • Transparent reporting of uncertainty.
  1. Research Limitations

Cyber intelligence research is affected by incomplete information, changing infrastructure, source bias, delayed reporting and false-positive indicators.

Our assessments represent the evidence available at the time of publication and may be revised when new information emerges.

  1. Our Commitment

X Cyber Squad aims to advance independent cyber intelligence research through technical investigation, analytical discipline, transparent methodologies and responsible innovation.
